“Saying Goodbye to Magic Realism” (Silvia Moreno-Garcia, The New York Times)
Magical realism has become synonymous with the general Latin American writing. Sylvia Moreno Garcia managed editor approval of her bestselling novel, Mexican Gothic to be labeled as Goth and horror novel instead of the presumed magical realism this open doors for other authors of color to gain hope of seeing more novels on the shelf of horror and otherwise out of bounds genre for Latin American authors, comps or comparative titles would be the less favorable option of genres who fell short of magical realism or horror.
Sylvia Moreno-Garcia goes on to explain how she has also heard her work called, “telenovela-like”, which she feels is an unfair statement, considering other written dramatics by other authors, would never be considered to fall under Soap Opera.
